Cruach Mhor Wind Farm Repowering

In June 2025, Belltown Power entered a partnership with Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) to redevelop and repower the existing Cruach Mhor Wind Farm when it reaches the end of its operational life, currently expected for 2029.

Project Specifics of Existing Scheme

Cruach Mhor Wind Farm was built in 2004 and consists of 35 turbines with a total capacity of 29MW. The site is located primarily within the Strath nan Lub forest area, south of Strachur and north of Ormidale on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.

Location Argyll and Bute, Scotland
Capacity 29MW
Turbines 35x Vestas V52 (0.85MW) turbines
Status Operational
End of Life Estimate: 2029

Repowered Scheme

Belltown was selected as FLS' development partner by competitive process. Repowering upgrades the existing project with new, state-of-the-art turbines. This ensures existing wind farms continue to decarbonise our electricity system and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions into the future. With the latest turbine technology, this will mean replacing the existing 35 turbines with fewer, larger turbines. We will share more details of the repowered scheme when available.

Next Steps

The early stages of the design process are now underway. Over the course of development, Belltown Power’s Project Team will work closely with specialists to carry out extensive site surveys and assessments to inform the new design. When this is ready, Belltown will undertake formal public consultation, to present draft proposals for public feedback and develop further drafts before submitting a full planning application.

Community Benefits and Ownership

Tirg_community

Belltown Power fundamentally believes renewable energy projects should benefit the communities that host them. We aim for a community scheme to bring tangible benefits to as much of the community as possible, including:

  • 1% of the project ownership for free to the local community and the opportunity to buy a further 4% at cost, once the project is operational, plus more at market rate if desired.
  • In addition to the ownership offering, we will provide £5,000/MW (index linked) of Community Benefit for the lifetime of the project. Depending on a community's need this could be part or wholly front- loaded to support larger projects.
  • Where we can, we work with local businesses that meet the necessary environmental, safety and quality standards.
