Community

We take the challenge of the Scottish, Welsh, and UK Governments’ desire for community empowerment and local ownership seriously. We have gone beyond offering communities the opportunity for local investment and have taken steps to enable real uptake of community ownership in our onshore wind projects a way that truly benefits everyone. All our onshore wind projects in development offer an element of free and discounted ownership opportunties in addition to community benefit commitments.

Our operational projects already provide significant contributions to community initiatives across the UK with £6m due to be distributed over their operational lifetimes.

We pride ourselves on working openly and transparently with local communities.

Our unique and groundbreaking onshore wind community ownership scheme

Our unique and groundbreaking community ownership scheme donates 1% ownership of our onshore wind projects to local community organisations. We enable local community organisations the opportunity to buy a further 4% of ownership at-cost once the project is operational and potentially more at market value, if desired.

Our provision is an industry-leading example of community ownership and offers communities the ability to secure the financial means to own a material part of the project. The proceeds generated from the project will support local ambitions and provide communities real ownership, channeling real community / developer partnerships.

Community benefit

Since Belltown Power was founded in 2013, we have worked hard to approach community benefits in a meaningful and considered way. Our existing projects have already provided over £1.5m of community benefit towards local community initiatives across the UK and this is expected to reach over £6m over their operational lifetimes. All our onshore wind and solar projects in development include a provision of community benefit.

We provide bespoke offerings where it suits our community partners. This includes an upfront grant of £500,000 from the Tirgwynt Wind Farm to support the construction of a brand-new primary school building for Ysgol Carno in Powys, Wales, or offering energy discount schemes to local residents. In all cases, we ensure that communities receive tangible value from hosting our projects.

Community engagement

Early and meaningful community engagement is central to how we work. Our community campaigns are designed to ensure local residents and communities are informed of development plans and the process. Our aim is to develop projects with our community partners, and we actively encourage and welcome their feedback and insight as part of that process.
